Bring an authentic taste of Japan into your kitchen with our Nameko Grow Kit. Known in the Netherlands as the Japanse bundelzwam, this highly popular mushroom is instantly recognizable by its vibrant, orange-brown caps and its unique, naturally glossy or slippery texture. This gelatinous coating acts as a fantastic natural thickener, making Nameko the star ingredient in traditional miso soups and rich, savory stews. Cultivated on a hearty 2.5 kg block of premium blended hardwood (oak, beech, and poplar), this variety thrives in cooler temperatures, making it a perfect project for a chilly room, basement, or garage during the cooler months!

Description

Growkit Instructions:

Step 1

Unbox the Block: Open your grow kit box to reveal the 2.5 kg premium hardwood substrate block (approx. 12.5 x 30 x 20 cm), fully colonized and ready to grow.

Step 2

The Top Cut: Nameko typically prefers to fruit in clusters from the top of the block. Cut the plastic completely open across the top surface, leaving a 5 cm collar of plastic standing up around the edges to trap moisture.

Step 3

Find a Cool Spot: This is the most crucial step! Nameko requires cooler temperatures to trigger fruiting. Place the kit in a well-ventilated area with indirect daylight where the temperature consistently stays between a cool 10°C and 15°C (like an unheated room or basement).

Step 4

Create a Humidity Tent: Drape a loosely punctured clear plastic bag or the provided humidity tent over the block. High humidity is essential for Nameko to develop its signature glossy caps.

Step 5

Mist Daily: Using a spray bottle, mist the inside walls of your humidity tent 2 to 3 times every day to keep the microclimate nice and steamy.

Step 6

Watch for Pins: Keep up your daily misting and watch the surface. Within a couple of weeks, you will see dense clusters of tiny, bright orange-brown pins emerging from the top of the block.

Step 7

Let Them Shine: As the mushrooms grow taller, you will notice their caps develop a slippery, glossy coating—this is completely natural and exactly what you want to see!

Step 8

Twist and Harvest: The Nameko mushrooms are ready to harvest when the caps have opened up but are still slightly convex. Gently grasp the cluster at the base, twist, and pull them free. Keep misting the block to encourage another flush!
