Growkit Instructions:

Step 1

Unbox the Block: Open your grow kit box to reveal the 2.5 kg substrate block (approx. 12.5 x 30 x 20 cm), fully colonized and ready to fruit.

Step 2

Remove the Plastic: Unlike oyster mushrooms that fruit from a small cut, Shiitake blocks prefer to fruit from all sides. Completely remove the plastic bag and place the bare, brown “bark-covered” block on a plate or tray.

Step 3

Find the Light: Place the block in a well-ventilated area. Shiitake mushrooms specifically need at least 1 hour of daylight every day to trigger healthy fruiting, so ensure it gets a good amount of indirect sunlight.

Step 4

Create a Humidity Tent: Because the block is fully exposed, it needs protection from drying out. Drape a loose, heavily punctured clear plastic bag or humidity tent over the block to trap moisture while allowing air to flow.

Step 5

Mist Daily: Using a spray bottle, generously mist the inside walls of your humidity tent 2 to 3 times a day. You can also lightly mist the block itself if it looks dry.

Step 6

Watch the Caps Emerge: Keep up your daily misting. Within a week or two, you will see small brown pins pushing their way out of the block from all different sides.

Step 7

Time the Harvest: The mushrooms are maturing when the caps expand into their classic umbrella shape. They are ready to harvest when the thin “veil” underneath the cap has broken to reveal the gills, but the outer edges of the cap are still slightly curled downward.

Step 8

Snip and Enjoy: Use a sharp knife or a pair of scissors to cut the mushrooms cleanly at the base of the stem. Keep misting the block to encourage your next flush of delicious Shiitake!
